How We Help Others

It has been said that “There is no form of charity that is unfamiliar to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul.“

SVdP - Detroit operates many special works in Southeast Michigan, including parish food pantries, soup kitchens, thrift stores, summer camps, utility assistance, hospital and prison visits. Help to Victims of Plymouth Fire

At 31-years-old, working almost full time and going to school at Wayne State University, Roxanne Haynes thought she had everything she needed in life. That was until February 10, 2011 when a massive blaze tore its way through the Park Manor Apartments in Plymouth, leaving 16 families homeless. Roxanne was among them and lost everything.“There is nothing left of the building and my home. Where I lived is nothing but an empty shell. I honestly have lost everything, including my laptop computer, the machine I need most, because it’s how I do my school work,” said Roxanne. With nowhere else to turn, Roxanne called The Call For Action Team and they sent her on a free shopping spree at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store in Westland.  Since the SVdP thrift stores are set up like department stores, Roxanne was able to go through the racks and racks of designer clothing and pick out whatever her heart desired. For Roxanne, the new clothes are vital because after the fire she was left with only the clothes on her back. She will also receive furniture for her new apartment. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Detroit helped 10 families all victims of the same fire.
