St. Vincent de Paul is kicked off Operation Coat Check, a Metro Detroit wide effort to collect coats to keep those in need warm this winter.
St. Vincent de Paul is asking Metro Detroiters to go through their closets and “check” their coats. If they are too small, too big, or too anything at all, donate them to any of their 13 St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Stores or support the effort with a cash donation at svdpdetroit.org
“The need is greater than ever this year, “ said SVDP Executive Director, Bill Brazier. “After last winter’s polar vortex, we really need the help of the community to meet the increasing numbers of people that are coming to us for help to keep warm. Through the simple donation of a coat you can make a significant impact on the life of someone in our community.”
Detroit Tiger Alex Avila is helping the effort. “St. Vincent de Paul is an excellent organization and I truly believe that Operation Coat Check will help so many people,” said Avila, “In my professional career I’m a catcher, but I’m asking Metro Detroiters to ‘pitch’ in to help those in need!”
Operation Coat Check kicks off with a pep rally and coat collection on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s headquarters at 600 East Lafayette in Detroit. The day-long event will start with the De La Salle High School marching band, dancing bears and fun activities as Blue Cross team members collect coats for Operation Coat Check.
“Many people in our community don’t have adequate clothing to stay warm outdoors in winter weather, which can be extremely detrimental to their health and overall quality of life,” said Daniel J. Loepp, president and CEO, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. “We look forward to lending our support to St. Vincent de Paul’s Operation Coat Check and helping those in need have more resources to prepare for another Michigan winter.”
SVdP encourages other corporate partners to join Blue Cross in making Operation Coat Check a success by hosting their own coat drives. Coats may be dropped off at any of the 13 conveniently located SVdP Thrift Stores in Southeast Michigan and online monetary donations are appreciated as well. Go to www.svdpdetroit.com for complete information. Operation Coat Check will continue through January.
